Overview

Exquisite. Elegant. Exciting. Exclusive. As lofty as these words sound, they only begin to scratch the surface when describing one of the world’s most desired sport utility vehicles.

The latest luxury barge from Land Rover carries more than its L460 internal designation. A solid reputation spanning five decades rests squarely on its shoulders, challenging the newest Range Rover to step up and do its forebears proud. This early, it seems to be succeeding. Or at least Land Rover wants us to think so, claiming that the fifth-generation model is the most desirable yet.

One look at the 2023 Range Rover is enough to inspire the most ardent 4x4 fantasies. Serene comfort, for instance. The stoic composure even under pressure, a classic British trait. Then there’s also all-conquering capability. Each of these is an iconic and mandatory Range Rover hallmark, with succeeding iterations merely filling the gaps for everything else in between.

And Land Rover has been making sure that the gaps are well-filled, indeed. It starts with the new Range Rover’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture platform. Also known as MLA-Flex, it has proven its mettle in previous models from Land Rover and Jaguar, including the fourth-generation Range Rover. With advanced engineering using virtual development methods, combined with the carmaker’s rigorous development program, the new Range Rover stays faithful to its roots while delivering an SUV experience unlike anything that came before it.

The new Range Rover is born in the United Kingdom, undergoing everything from design, development, and engineering. It holds at least 125 patents on its technologies, from the chassis to the hybrid electric battery. Engineers draw from motorsport-derived simulation technology in testing the vehicle on the virtual space with over 140,000 of computational analysis. This is followed by a punishing regimen of physical tests all over the world, from blistering heat to extreme cold.
Exterior
The new Range Rover comes in both standard and long wheelbase versions. Dimensions for the former are a length of 5,052mm, a width of 2,047mm, combined with a wheelbase of 2,997mm. Meanwhile, the latter stands 5,252mm long and 2,048mm wide on a 3,197mm wheelbase. Both stand 1,870mm high, with a maximum water wading depth of 900mm.

While it brings a recognizable silhouette, the 2023 Range Rover is unmistakably modern in execution. Land Rover’s design brief called for the most capable and luxurious iteration yet, while emphasizing a minimalist aesthetic. Sophistication by reduction, as the company might call it.
Redesigned digital LED headlamps seemingly blend with the intricately designed grille, providing a beam range of up to 500 meters. The integrated front bumper houses twin rows of LED fog lamps, hovering above the smooth skid plate.
Prominent character lines accentuate the Range Rover’s clean profile, made even more evident by the retractable door handles. Aside from resulting in a contemporary appearance, the sophisticated surfaces have a practical purpose. They bring down the drag coefficient to 0.30, making the latest Range Rover the most aerodynamic luxury SUV in the world.

The large greenhouse, with its virtually invisible panes, contributes to the vehicle’s impression of size and substance. The rounded edges of the doors meet the glass in a clean finish that contributes to a uninterrupted yet strong waistline. Even the exterior mirrors look as if they’re floating in a flawless sea of glass. Uninterrupted edges continue to the split tailgate, where the LED rear lamps have been slimmed down to the extreme. So thin, in fact, that they are hidden in plain sight as extensions of the black tailgate trim, only appearing when the brakes are engaged.

Twin sharkfin antennae reside on the roof, which has a maximum carrying capacity of 100 kilograms with the optional crossbars attached. At the very least, the 2023 Range Rover comes with a selection of 12 exterior colors.
Three alloy wheel sizes are also available, from 21, 22, and for the very first time on the Range Rover, 23 inches. This is on top of the near-unlimited customization choices, offered by Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations, to make the new Range Rover truly yours.
