I met composer Calvin Taylor at an American Guild of Organists convention. He had a booth selling publications of his compositions and he introduced me to his wonderful settings of American spirituals. This selection comes from his 1998 publication, "Five Spirituals for Organ," commissioned and dedicated to Dr. Marilyn Mason. The work received its world premier by Dr. Mason on September 21, 1998 at the RLDS Temple in Independence, Missouri. Their first English performance took place at Selby Abbey, York, on October 4, 1998.
