In the webinar "Acute and Long-Term Cardiovascular Effects of COVID-19 in the Post-Pandemic Era," moderator Gregory A. Roth, MD, MPH, FACC, and an international panelist of experts including Ziyad Al-Aly, MD; Jeroen J. Bax, MD, PhD, FACC; and Sarah Wulf Hanson, PhD, MPH, discuss the latest clinical research surrounding the acute and long-term effects, and multiple cardiovascular sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (COVID). Not just a respiratory virus (6:11), COVID manifests in many organ systems, including the cardiovascular system. Key cardiovascular sequelae of COVID include but are not limited to, myocardial injury, thrombosis, arrhythmia, and long COVID. To inform clinicians on the latest research, panelists share findings on the impairment of daily function, the severity of symptoms and the disability weight of severe long COVID cases (21:22), and the advanced imaging techniques (30:32) clinicians can employ when treating patients with long-lasting symptoms following COVID infection. To conclude, the panelists discuss takeaway messages for providers at the bedside, including the importance of patient communication (39:35) and keeping up with ongoing research, as there is no single "silver bullet" for the treatment of long COVID, as well as steps toward developing better therapies (42:40), including the need to first gain a better understanding of the resulting diseases and the diagnostic criteria.
