Winter is coming. Northern Ontario — specifically Sudbury — has been blanketed in fluffy snow for a few days already this year, before a late-fall heat-wave sent it melting away — perhaps not for long. After the fall time change, many of us find ourselves spending more time driving after dark than we have for months.

Bottom line? Whether you drive in a big city like Toronto or Vancouver, or somewhere remote like Northern Ontario, a good set of headlights work wonders to fend off eye fatigue on longer trips, keep you more alert, and give you precious extra seconds to react to potential road hazards.

After testing countless vehicles over the years on dark and lonely highways, Northern Correspondent Justin Pritchard says headlights are getting better by the year, and you don't have to shell out the big bucks for top-notch lighting. The 2021 Kia K5 is the most recent, and perhaps the strongest example: the clean white colour, thick saturation of the driver's immediate path, and tremendous high-beam reach are exactly what Justin wants from a lighting system.
