The Royal Proclamation of 1763: Rights and Relationships

On October 7, 1763, King George III issued a Royal Proclamation establishing a new administrative structure over British North America. It also established new rules and protocols for future relations between Indigenous Nations and the colonial administration. The Royal Proclamation of 1763 has long been considered one of the foundational documents in the recognition of Indigenous rights. It also established the protocols that eased interactions between Indigenous peoples and newcomers s well as the ongoing treaty making process in Canada. The Proclamation continues to be one of the foundational documents in the evolving Crown-Indigenous relationship in Canada
