Vulcanizing puncture patches can be used to permanently fix punctures in bicycle tubes. The kit I'm using here is the Park Tool VP-1, and there are several in the market.

1) Pick a patch of the right size - you may have more than one hole in the case of a snakebite puncture, for instance
2) Sandpaper around the hole to roughen surface
3) Apply vulcanizing fluid around the hole. Ensure you cover an area larger than the patch as you don't want the patch to peel at the edges
4) Peel the silver backing off the patch and apply the patch over the hole, pressing firmly all over, especially around the edges
5) Wait for a couple of minutes, examine to see the edges aren't coming apart. You're done!

You can inflate just a bit outside the tyre to examine it, but do not inflate much more than that when outside the tyre.

With this type of patch, the patch chemically bonds with the tube, essentially becoming "one with" the tube - you can even patch over a patch.

Please note that vulcanizing patches are different from pre-glued patches. They work well too, but will not be as everlasting as the vulcanizing variant.
