Initial Impressions of Luma AI Gaussian Splatting for Drone Mapping Imagery

The use of Gaussian Splatting for radiance field 3D model creation is a hot topic and the software that implements that processing has great potential for creating very high quality 3D visualizations. The most common demonstrations of this technology to date have been created from video captured in one or more circular orbits taken with a handheld phone close to ground level. This video illustrates the results from processing drone imagery from a mapping mission where the drone took photos while flying in a cross-hatched lawn-mower pattern and in an orbit. Virtual fly throughs of the Gaussian Splat radiance field and the photogrammetry (structure from motion) textured meshed model illustrate the current relative strengths and weaknesses of the two processing methods (at least with the present implementation in Luma AI as of mid October 2023).
