The Island was a hunting and fishing ground for Native Americans, until Dutch colonizers settled there in the 1600s. Eventually , it was transformed into a US military base. By the 1960s, the army left the island, and it became home to the Coast Guard.

Today, the island is a National Monument, and it’s open to the public every summer, making it the perfect escape from busy New York!

The best way see to the Island is by foot or bike. And you’ll find so many things to do there!
