15 Biggest River Monsters Ever Caught
Giant monsters don’t only swim in the vast oceans, they can be found in freshwater as well. Although
admittedly, they are not as large as their saltwater counterparts, but these creatures are still massive
and truly deserve being called river monsters.
From a fearless tiger of the deep to the biggest freshwater fish to have ever been caught in history, here
are 15 of the biggest river monsters ever caught.

15. The Goliath Tiger Fish
If you’re named Goliath, you should be able to back it up. The Goliath tigerfish definitely lives up to its
moniker. A native of the Congo River basin, the Lualaba River, Lake Upemba and Lake Tanganyika in
Africa, it's the largest member of the tigerfish clan, a genus of fierce predators with protruding,
daggerlike teeth.
The biggest one on record was nearly 5 feet long and weighed 154 pounds, the equivalent of a super-
welterweight prizefighter. It outclasses other African game fish in speed and power, so much so that it is
said that these fish show no fear of crocodiles.

14. The Giant Mottled Eel
The Giant Mottled Eel, also known as the marbled eel, is the largest species of anguillid eel, as it can
grow up to 6.6 feet in length and 45 pounds in weight. Adults typically live in fresh and brackish
estuarine water, but they do sometimes migrate into the open ocean. They are common in the country
of Fiji, where two mysterious disappearances on the island were thought to be because of this river
monster.
If you find it hard to believe that a 6 foot long fish is capable of manhandling a person, well, I have my
doubts too. But the stories were enough to convince famed river monster hunter Jeremy Wade to look
for one. He had firsthand experience in tackling one of these river monsters, and he can personally
validate that it wasn’t a walk in the park.

13. The Arapaima
Also known as the paiche or the pirarucu, the arapaima is an air-breathing fish that plies the rainforest
rivers of South America's Amazon Basin and nearby lakes and swamps. One of the world's largest
freshwater fish species, these giants can grow up to 15 feet long and weigh up to 440 pounds, though
fish that big have not been reported for many years. More commonly, they’re about six feet long and
200 pounds.
This South American giant uses a “gulper” feeding strategy: By opening its large mouth, the fish creates
a vacuum that pulls in nearby food objects. Arapaimas survive mainly on fish, but they're also known to
eat fruits, seeds, and insects.

12. The Alligator Gar
The alligator gar truly is a monster freshwater fish. It’s a shark sized ancient fish, with a fearsome
reputation, that inhabits the rivers of the Mississippi river valley. They can grow to nearly 7 feet long and
weigh several hundred pounds. However, despite their sinister reputation, gar fish are not the man-
eaters they were once thought to be.
For nearly a half-century, alligator gars were considered “trash fish” or a “nuisance species” that were
detrimental to sport fisheries, and therefore targeted for elimination by state and federal authorities in
the United States, but the last ten years has seen a greater emphasis placed on the importance of
alligator gars to the ecosystems they inhabit.

11. The Goonch Catfish
The Goonch catfish is one of the largest species of catfish in the world. Also called the Giant Devil
Catfish, is a large Catfish that lives in India, Nepal, and other East Asian, Asian and Southeast Asian
Countries. The world record specimen was 6.6 feet long, and weighed 230 lbs.
They are reportedly massively strong, strong enough to handle a 12 foot long crocodile, if stories are to
be believed. Their body and tail is very muscular, thick, and powerful and a swipe from the tail can do
serious damage. Their mouth has many conical teeth that extend below the gum-line, and their bite is a
clamping non-release one. Those who have held a big Goonch will also have had an indication of their
strength. Just ask Jeremy Wade, he’s handled a fair number of goonchs filming his TV show.

10. The Nile Perch
The Nile perch is an important food fish in Africa and a prized catch for sport fishermen, but the species
is also a massive environmental nightmare. In fact, the Nile perch is massive in more ways than one. It's
a giant among fishes, reaching a length of up to 6 feet and a weight of more than 500 pounds.
Anything that big eats a lot, and when misguided humans have introduced the Nile perch into new
aquatic ecosystems most notably
