The Rubicon Trail is the most famous 17.5-mile off-road trail in the world. 4x4's have only been getting better as the years go on. When 4 wheeling the Rubicon trail they use to be just stock trucks, now they are modified to get over the huge obstacles. The Rubicon Trail is a technical and difficult off-road trail that challenges hundreds of people every year. Though it is said to be decreasing in difficulty over the years, it still takes skill and a capable vehicle. A rig with larger tires (33" or bigger), high clearance, low gears, and a locker makes it much easier to complete this trail. Often a spotter is outside the vehicle to help with placement of the tires to avoid flipping getting stuck. Obstacles you may encounter, are huge boulders, steep inclines, and cross some creeks. Be prepared to do some wrenching on the trail and for the best four-wheeling you have ever done!

This time we didn't have our rig so we decided to just hike a few miles and watch to others. We weren't sure if the trail would be open yet or not. It is and there were a lot of people enjoying it. Can not wait to get out there this year with my family.

The Rubicon Trail is in the El Dorado National Forest and rated difficult to extreme. It is 17.5 miles from start to finish and can be done in 8-9 hours depending on your skills. The elevation is 6000 to 7200.

Directions: Head east on Hwy 50 to Ice House rd. ( 63 miles from Sac) Stay on Ice House road for 23.4 miles. (stay to the right on Ice House road). Cross the damn at Loon Lake and take a left the end and drive down to the staging area.
