The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale has the weight of an iconic Italian brand on its proverbial shoulders, with the all-new small SUV having the tall task of having to deliver meaningful sales volume, which would help shore up not only its future but also that of the marque and its broader line-up.

But the Tonale's significance to Alfa Romeo is much larger than just that, as it's also its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV), with the all-wheel-drive flagship combining a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to deliver 206kW of power and an electric-only driving range of 60km (WLTP).
