The tragic story of Air Asia Flight 8501 was the end of a rough year for aviation. A routine flight between Surabaya in Indonesia and Singapore goes horribly wrong at cruise altitude. The Disaster occurring in the twilight days of 2014 claimed the lives of 162 people. Here at Disaster Breakdown we analyze the events of accidents such as this to unpack how they happened. This deep dive into Airasia 8501 will do just that.

Its 5 in the morning on Sunday, December 28th, 2014. An Airbus A320, operated by the Indonesian off-shoot of Air Asia was preparing to push back from the gate at Juanda International Airport, in Surabaya on the Indonesian Island of Java. Air Asia Flight 8501, was a short haul hop over to Singapore and nearly every seat was booked for this two and a half hour flight across the Java Sea. 162 passengers and crew turned up at the gate in Surabaya and boarded the aircraft.
Curiously though, a total of 23 passengers never showed up for the flight including a family of ten who intended to travel to Singapore for new year’s celebrations.
By 5:30 that morning, the jetway was disconnected and the Airbus was pushed back from the gate. This was expected to be a routine flight, a normal morning shift for the pilots and flight attendants. Though surely for many passengers, the flight would be an opportunity to catch up on some sleep. The pilots began taxing the plane down to the far Western side of the airport for a departure from runway 10.
