Despite a rocky launch, the 2024 Chery Omoda 5 small SUV is off to a strong start in Australia, where it's already winning buyers over with its winning combination of high value and premium design. But its efforts have now been taken to the next level with the release of its new GT flagship.

The Omoda 5 GT's formula is pretty simple, with it swapping out the regular 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine for a 1.6-litre unit that increases maximum power and torque by 29kW/65Nm, to 137kW/275Nm. Better yet, it also swaps out the entry-level and mid-range variants' continuously variable transmission (CVT) for a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

Needless to say, the new Hyundai Kona N Line rival promises to be a sportier drive, but is it? In this expert review, CarsGuide Deputy Editor James Cleary finds out by putting the Omoda 5 GT through its paces over the course of a week of testing.
