In this video we are looking at the Jeep Cherokee XJ! Launched for the 1984 model year, this was a compact sport utility vehicle produced until 2001. It was the first all-new design from Jeep since the 1963 SJ Wagoneer, as well as the first American off-road vehicle built with a unibody design. The Cherokee XJ was a pioneer for the new segment of sport utility vehicles, or SUVs, which wasn’t defined as such during the early days of the XJ. Jeep would market them as ‘Sportwagons’ instead. It's an iconic design, as Automobile Magazine says: “Possibly the best SUV shape of all time, it is the paradigmatic model to which other designers have since aspired.”

Unfortunately, by 2001, the XJ was getting outdated and it was time for a new vehicle. Watch along for a full history of the XJ, from release in 1984 to its cancellation in 2001!
