Nearly 2,000 garbage trucks worth of plastic end up in the rivers, lakes, and oceans of the world every day. Smaller than a sesame seed, between 15 and 51 trillion microplastics can be found in surface water worldwide – posing an increasing threat of pollution. The U.S. National Science Foundation is investing in several research projects aimed at combating this problem from multiple angles.
