Christian Outreach in Action (COA) [https://www.coalongbeach.org] provides services helping families and individuals to get back on their feet and make progress toward a healthy and sustainable life. During the coronavirus pandemic, COA Long Beach has seen a four- and five-fold increase in the number of diapers it gives away for free every Friday morning.

In this video, COA volunteer Keith Jajko explains the weekly free diaper giveaway, and an increase from 20 to 25 mothers each week to more than 100 each Friday in April.

“They’re helping so many mothers out there, with the cost of diapers these days, and not being able to go out,” Jajko said. “We have to pay for the diapers, from donations, so we’re looking for help to continue to do this, as long as this emergency lasts.”

“We are now getting people from far away, where it used to be local,” said COA staff member John Gomez.

COA had to adjust many of its programs to respond to the pandemic – but not its daily hot meals and bi-weekly food banks, and not the diaper giveaway.

Still, COA had to suspend its once-weekly clothing and household items drive; and its free legal clinic. COA’s thrift store at Clark Avenue and Atherton Street in Long Beach also was forced to close – taking away a key revenue stream.

The prepared meals (daily) and food banks (Tuesday and Thursday mornings) continue, but all in a to-go manner. COA staff and volunteers take precautions, such as latex gloves and face masks, to hand out meals and food from a side gate at the 515 E. Third St. facility in downtown Long Beach.

COA is a registered nonprofit organization, which is based in a church property in downtown Long Beach; but operationally it is nondenominational, with a belief in faith-based teachings that tell us to provide compassionate assistance to those in need.

We are compelled by the need around us to feed people in need, provide spiritual support, help heal the sick ... and to ultimately teach them the skills necessary to reach and sustain self-sufficiency. To do this, COA depends almost entirely on private donations.

We have been blessed by the support from the community, in terms of donated food, clothing and other items, as well as sponsorships and corporate assistance.
