What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that result in irreversible damage to the optic nerve, usually caused by high pressure in the eye. There are two different types of glaucoma, primary and secondary. Primary glaucoma is the most common type.

What are the symptoms of glaucoma?

Unfortunately, most glaucoma doesn’t cause symptoms until very late in the course of the disease. Symptoms include blurry vision, pain and irritation, as well as headaches.
Therefore, it is very important that you have regular glaucoma checks with a trained optician to prevent loss of vision.

How is glaucoma diagnosed?

Glaucoma is usually identified during a regular eye examination with an optician, who should then refer you to a Consultant for a formal diagnosis. If you have a family history of glaucoma, then it is recommended that you get your eyes checked at least once a year as glaucoma risk increases with age.

How is glaucoma treated?

Glaucoma is easily treated with eye drops, laser treatment or surgery depending on the type of glaucoma, it's severity and when it is discovered. Glaucoma surgery can also be combined with cataract surgery.

What are the benefits of glaucoma surgery?

The main benefit of surgery is that it reduces further sight loss and the risk of blindness.

Is Glaucoma caused by lifestyle?

No. Glaucoma is mostly a result of genetics or previous eye conditions.
The only lifestyle change you can make to improve your outlook with glaucoma is to go for regular eye checkups for early detection.
