Why do we ask the question "Why"? For when we ask this question, we demand a reason. And we assume that nothing is ever without a reason. Furthermore, the reason should be sufficient, but when is a reason sufficient? And what do we exactly demand when we want a reason? This is what Schopenhauer explored in his book "On the Fourfold Root of the Principle of Sufficient Reason".

This work of Schopenhauer is essential when reading any other of his books (especially "The World as Will and Representation", and whenever reading Kant, Nietzsche and Descartes.
