Blood clots in the lungs can cause high blood pressure in the heart's arteries, a serious condition. This can turn into a chronic problem if the clots remain for more than three months. Dr Bagirath Raghuraman, Senior Consultant, Cardiology Adult, Program Director, Heart Transplant at Narayana Health City, Bommansandra, Bengaluru, sheds light on this heart concern.
Chronic conditions arise when a blood clot in the lungs, known as pulmonary embolism, persists over time. Initially, these clots block the blood flow but can lead to increased pressure and stress on the heart if they don't clear up. Dr Bagirath explains the treatment for these clots.
Surgery named pulmonary thromboendarterectomy is used for larger, more central clots. For smaller clots further from the centre, a technique called balloon pulmonary angioplasty is preferred. Sometimes, a combination of both, known as a hybrid procedure, is the best course of action.
Dr Bagirath highlights that these treatments aim to remove the clots and ease the heart's workload, improving the patient's health and quality of life.
