Volkswagen's electric car for the masses is the ID.4 which pairs practicality & comfort with an adequate driving range. All this is to hopefully convince the range anxietist's to make the switch from their internal combustion engines to an all electric vehicle.
The ID.4's interior has a contemporary design with high-tech features, ambient lighting, and generous cargo space. Its uncluttered and standard models come with cloth seats, heated in the front, as standard but going with the Pro model brings faux-leather upholstery along with 12-way power adjustable front seats with memory functionality. The ID.4's cargo area is also very spacious.
There are six trims available with the entry level car called Life. Following Life comes Style and then Family, with the luxury Max and sporty GTX and GTX Max at the upper end of the range. A limited 1st Edition model was also available at launch, with upgrades over the Life trim being bigger 20-inch alloy wheels, a black roof and some unique badging.
The ID.4 comes standard with a 10" infotainment touchscreen that can be upgraded to a larger 12" version if required. Navigation is standard with both displays and so are wireless versions of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. All ID.4 models also come with a 5.3-inch digital gauge display as well as voice-recognition capability.
The ID.4 is available with either a 52kWh or 77kWh battery, with a single motor driving the rear wheels. Versions with the smaller battery are available with either 146bhp or 168bhp, badged as Pure and Pure Performance respectively, while the 77kWh setup features a Pro version that delivers slightly more power at 172bhp and an increased range. The ID.4’s 126kW on-board charging ability can charge the battery from 0-80% in just 34 minutes, or just over eight hours if you top up via an 11kW charger at home.
Pure and Pure Performance models offer a claimed 213-mile maximum range, while the GTX and Pro Performance provide 300 and 320 miles from a single charge, respectively.
The ID.4 range starts with the Life models which sell from around £36,500, but you’ll need an extra £20,000 to secure a top-spec GTX Max car.
