I had a couple of viewer questions about how to get fuel to a tractor. Would an investment in a farm diesel tank make sense? What is "dyed diesel"? How much cheaper is off-road diesel? Are there viable mobile tanks with pumps that can go in a pickup? We cover all of those topics in this video.

First let's discuss farm diesel or "dyed diesel", or "off road" diesel. Is it different? Only because it is dyed red, and it's red because, by law, you're prohibited from running it in your diesel powered truck or car because it's taxed at a lot lower rate than "on road" diesel. If your state catches you with red diesel in your pickup it won't end pretty. It's definitely not worth the risk.

How much cheaper is farm diesel than the stuff you buy at the pump? Depends on where you live, (it varies from state to state) but it can be significant. Where I live in Missouri it's about 40 cents a gallon.

If you burn a lot of fuel it makes sense to have on-farm storage for the savings and the convenience. I have a good friend who has three tanks...one for farm diesel, one for on-road diesel and one for gas, and he fills his vehicles out of the latter two. The people who sell farm diesel can usually also bring on road fuel as well. It would be tremendously convenient to never have to go to a gas station.

The downside of using farm fuel, and the reason I don't have a tank, is, if you don't use a lot of fuel, it can get old. Diesel doesn't degrade as bad as gas, but it can get a slime growing on it or draw condensation, and contaminants and diesel do bad things to injection systems. I like keeping my fuel fresh. So I run the five gallon buckets back and forth to the convenience store and haul them in the back of my truck.

If you're doing a lot of tractor work, getting a farm diesel tank and having the fuel delivered may help you save a lot of time and money. If you're like me and you don't use the tractor all that much, the pickup truck mounted tank or the five gallon plastic tanks make more sense.
