In this land of gluttonous excess, we can’t ever seem to get our fill of poorly made, cheaply sold, inefficient, mass-produced gadgets that fail to deliver on even their most fundamental promises. As I sit in the grandstand watching corporate America’s race to the bottom I’m reminded of the time I hired a plumber to unclog a drain. He charged me $130 to snake the drain without unclogging it. Then he wanted another $130 to snake the drain a second time as if we misunderstood each other about the goal of the job I hired him for. I thought I hired him to unclog the drain, he thought I hired him to bring his snake over for a play date with my plumbing. He was incredulous that I expected the drain to be unclogged. I was incredulous that he thought that I would just endlessly drop $130 bills into the drain.

It seems, now, that the floggers of cheap goods have taken a cue from the service industry: give the people a machine that goes through the motions of cleaning, make it out of really shiny plastic and add a touch of novelty, and promise that their lives will be unimaginably easier and they will gladly throw their money away. We’ve long since stopped expecting products to deliver so there is no backlash, no revolt when they pass mediocre products like The Hoover Floormate and Bissell Crosswave off on us. All that is to say that if you are expecting either of these machines to scrub your grout you will be sorely disappointed.
