‘We don’t realise that an entire generation of boys have grown up in this time, where there hasn’t been any positive talk about being a boy’.

Caitlin Moran’s latest book, What About Men? sees her turn her attention onto men, and the influences, habits, and societal pressures that have shaped what it means to be a man at this point in the 21st century, before issuing a rallying call to embrace a more inclusive and compassionate understanding of manhood.

In July 2023, Moran appeared here at the Southbank Centre for an in conversation about the book and its themes with Jo Elvin, former editor of Glamour and YOU Magazine. In this clip taken from that event the pair discuss the rise of Andrew Tate and the context within which his brand of aggressive, toxic masculinity has flourished both online and in the real world.

‘We’ve got used to saying ‘typical men’ because we think they can take it. But for a 15 year old boy he does not know the context of patriarchy, women not having the vote… He just knows that for all of his lifetime no one has said anything positive about men, until Andrew Tate turns up and goes ‘No masculinity is incredible… I will give you confidence. I will provide you with a brotherhood’ and that is incredibly intoxicating’.

Published in July 2023, What About Men? navigates the ever-evolving landscape of modern masculinity. It sees Moran confront the traditional gender norms head-on and dive into the complexities of what it means to be a man in today's world. With her signature wit and insightful wisdom, the author unravels the stereotypes and societal expectations, encouraging a more inclusive and nuanced dialogue around masculinity.
