Hey Guys, we've had the Porsche 992 Carrera S now exactly five days. Not enough time perhaps to fully evaluate a performance car and in truth not long enough to qualify for the Real World Review moniker. However since I am already a 991/2 owner I feel better qualified than most to shrink our evaluation process and have done my level best to give you a real feel for the car. I also think that this 911 qualifies for one of the best looking 911 of them all. Truly this is a great looking car tweaked and enhanced subtly but the net result is a considerably more aggressive looking machine in no small part thanks to the standard wide rear arches and rounded rear end.

The 992 Carrera S produces 444bhp combined with 391lb ft of torque. This S is equipped with the Sport Chrono pack and covers the 0- 62mph benchmark in 3.5sec. (The 4S takes 3.4sec). There is only one 'wide' body style and we now have an 8-speed PDK twin clutch box which should ensure that Porsche stay right at the forefront in providing the world's very best twin clutch gearboxes.

The performance lift over the outgoing Carrera S is clear the second you drive the car and, coupled with the eight-speed gearbox, the new powertrain is immense. Engine sounds mighty for a turbo unit.

So what of the chassis? Absolutely terrific imo. On the motorway you’re impressed at the refinement on offer even with the optional 10mm drop in suspension specified and given the Carrera S is running on 21'' rear rims, So overall the cabin is reasonably quiet for this type of car, and the ride impressively compliant. Downsides? Well wind noise inside the cabin is noticeable at higher speeds and there is still a degree of tyre roar but these never really interfere with the driving dynamics and this is a sports car after all. A new wet mode makes life easier when driving in difficult conditions by maximising the downforce available.

But find some space, nudge the gearbox into Sport and the new powertrain is near instantaneous in it's delivery. Seriously difficult bends can be taken at speeds that probably wouldn't have been possible in the previous generation outside a fully blown GT3. The brakes are also excellent even with the steel discs, though this has always been the case with Porsche. In the corners you could be forgiven for thinking you are in a 991 generation GTS, front and rear track width is up, noticeably increasing front-end grip and with it confidence.

The interior is simply a leap on from the 991 but to my eyes perhaps not a resounding success since you cannot see all the dials through the steering wheel. However there is no denying from a technology viewpoint it is the best available out there with a fairly simple dash in the vain of the Panamera, part electronic dials and part analogue with the REV counter centrally placed as normal in a 911. The infotainment centre is huge for this type of sports car. No heads up display though which can now be had on a Panamera.

Electronics abound but the 992 never feels digital or synthetic on the move–from the standard PAS steering which is brilliant and optional rear-wheel steering, (£1592), to the standard adaptive dampers – the 10mm lower Sport Suspension set-up is £665 and active anti-roll bars (PDDC), comes in at £2273. A torque-vectoring differential is standard.

Porsche have engineered an all-new body-shell, now over 60% aluminium, 991s were around a third aluminium. The 992 isn’t perfect but with every new version of 911, Porsche come closer and closer into turning this rear engined machine into the best drivers car available. One observation I have read is the car is now more GT and less sports car but imo this is simply not the case. Can't wait for the specials, the GTS and the GT3 variants.
