Tesla has withdrawn its application for state aid for its planned battery factory near Berlin as the CEO Elon Musk has declared that the electric vehicle maker opposed all subsidies. According to sources, Tesla was expected to receive 1.14 billion euros to support the investment, but the company has resigned.

A couple of months ago Elon Musk had flown to Germany to announce that the new battery factory will be established near Berlin very soon. According to sources Tesla had plans of investing 5 billion euros in the lithium-ion battery plant, with a decision on whether the government will tip in 1 billion towards it, expected to be at the end of 2021. Elon musk announced about this battery factory in 2020, saying that it will be one of the biggest battery plants in the world with 250GWh capacity.

However, not everyone is happy about the new factory. Although Tesla is pumping a lot of money on the project and scoring Europe for workers, there are some groups of locals who are opposing the project on environmental grounds, saying that it will pollute the water.
“I would tell him to stop building electro cars but rather fly to Mars,” said Manu Hoyer, one of the leaders of the locals.

To this Musk responded that, the factory will use relatively little water and the battery cell production at the site will be sustainable. Talking about the battery cells, we know that Tesla has been working on its new large format 4690 battery pack for a while now, but it appears now that these battery cells will make their first appearance in the Model Y which is being produced in Germany. These new batteries will be mounted in a pack which is supposed to be a structural element of the car rather than simply being raised into a position and bolted to the chassis from below.
In July, Whole Mars Catalog tweeted, “This is incredible. It’s the whole floor of the vehicle. And then you can see the parts that connect to the front and rear underbody like they talked about at Battery Day. It’s so simple. It just looks like a structural element of the car, but it’s the whole battery pack.”

As the new battery will lower Tesla’s cost per kilo-watt hour, this would result in the reduction of price for Tesla’s vehicles. The current battery system being used in electric vehicles accounts for 30 to 40 percent of the car’s cost and this is due to the usage of cobalt metal in lithium-ion batteries. The cathode in the battery is entirely made up of cobalt which is the major factor causing the surge in the price of these batteries. Tesla’s chief executive Elon Musk, recently announced to launch a car with a price tag of 25000 dollars and declared it the cheapest tesla of all times. In order to meet a price that low compared with other Tesla models, the company needs to make changes in their battery system which is only achievable through the in-house production of Tesla’s batteries.

In an announcement to investors, Musk said:

“We’ve got to really make sure we get a very steep ramp in battery production and continue to improve the cost per kilowatt-hour of the batteries — this is very fundamental and extremely difficult,”

He further added:
“We’ve got to scale battery production to crazy levels that people cannot even fathom today.”
