In the 1950s, five separate cases challenged the constitutionality of segregation in public schools. Thurgood Marshall, the head counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, helped represent the plaintiffs.

After arguments in all five cases were rejected in lower courts, the plaintiffs appealed to the Supreme Court in 1952. The consolidated cases became known as Brown v. Board of Education.
