Summer is here! Which also means that it’s time to prioritize sun protection. While we typically think about sun care as it relates to humans, animals can actually sunburn too. Although many non-domesticated animals have evolved to prevent harm from constant sun exposure, domesticated animals don’t have as sophisticated methods. So your domesticated pup can, in fact, get sunburnt.

The good news is, dogs cannot sunburn as easily as humans. Nonetheless, this isn’t something you should ignore, especially if your dog has fur that is short, thin, or light in color. Of course, dogs with long or thick fur have more coverage to protect their skin from the sun. Some breeds of dogs who are most at risk of sunburn include:
Bulldog
White Boxer
Dalmatian
Italian Greyhound
Boston Terrier
Miniature Pincher
Chinese Crested

Symptoms of sunburn in dogs will appear similar to those of human sunburns: visibly dry, red skin that may even blister or peel.

If your dog experiences a dog sunburn, there are several ways to heal your dog’s sunburn and provide relief from irritation:
Cold compress
Cold bath
Cortisone Ointment
Aloe Vera
OTC sprays
