Shaykh Muhammad Adeyinka Mendes reminds us in this Jum'a Khutbah that we often hear about the Medina and Meccan periods in the Sirah of the Prophet ﷺ, but within the latter is another “Ethiopian period”. Twice Muslims migrated to Ethiopia, first under Uthman bin Madh’un .

The second migration was under Jafar ibn Abu Talib, also known as Jafar at-Tayyar, a young man chosen to lead not based on age, but on his personal qualities. Escaping persecution in Mecca, his rousing speech to the King Najashi secured not just the safety & security of Muslims, still a minority, but importantly, the freedom to express their religion. For the following fourteen years the Muslims, grounded in their faith, played an active part in helping society and resolving its ails.

A pertinent story with parallels for Muslims living in the West.
