Our LTS Futures project is researching how to repurpose the gas pipelines connecting our towns and cities to hydrogen.

To meet net zero, we’ll all need to change our heating systems to a renewable technology. Hydrogen doesn’t produce greenhouse gases when it burns, so using it instead of natural gas could be the solution.

The Local Transmission System (or LTS) is a network of pipelines that transports natural gas to towns and cities across the UK. It’s over 11,000 kilometres long. If we can repurpose the LTS to carry hydrogen, it will be an important step towards decarbonising heating and the gas network.

We're currently testing a decommissioned LTS pipeline which runs from Grangemouth to Granton. This testing will lead to a live hydrogen trial in 2024 which will provide a blueprint to repurposing the entire LTS.

The findings will inform government heat policy, and could pave the way for system transformation of the UK gas network to hydrogen.
