Chelyan is a small, nearly forgotten town, situated in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Positioned on the southern bank of the Kanawha River, Chelyan lies southeast of Chesapeake and is accessible by West Virginia Turnpike.
The community derives its name from Chelyan Calvert, the son of an early postmaster.
As of 2024, Chelyan's population stands at 452 individuals, with a median age of 24 years and a median household income of 26K per year. Notably, there has been a 39% decrease in population, dropping from 920 in 2020 to the current figure of 452.
