The Ford Motor Company is on a little bit of a roll this year in the SUV segment. We have a chance to get a first look at the largest ute from the blue oval, the Expedition. But it’s just a look, if I want to move it I have to have that guy do it. For now.

The up-to-eight passenger SUV gets a significant refresh as well as some new trim levels and packages to entice a broader customer base.

The Timberline might be the most significant of those changes.

The smaller Explorer has received the off-roading Timberline treatment and according to Ford, they believe that about 30-percent of the full-size Expedition buyers want to do more adventuring.

The Timberline does that in a couple of pretty significant ways. The first is its ground clearance. At 10.6 inches that’s best in class. And underneath all that space, you’ll find the same underbody armor that’s on the F-150 Raptor.

The Expedition Timberline comes with 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler A/T tires, a two-speed transfer case that gets you a low gear.

It even gets Trail Turn Assist, the same system that’s on the Bronco, which tightens the vehicle’s turning radius. Will be very interested to see how that works on this long wheelbase for hairpin turns.

The Timberline, boy I want to say Timberlake, or Timberland, or Timbaland, but it’s not those.

Anyway, the Timber-line gets powered by Ford’s high-output 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. (graphic: 440 hp/510 lb-ft torque). That torque number should really help when it comes to a bit of rugged off-roading.

In addition to the Timberline, Ford’s bringing a Stealth Edition Performance Package to the party. That also gets the high-output EcoBoost but also gets a sport-tuned suspension and some sporty styling for your on-road Expedition endeavors.

If you spring for the Expedition Platinum then you’ll get to experience Ford’s BlueCruise, which is a hands-free highway driver’s assist technology.

Not, going to lie, hands-free makes me a bit skittish. However, the system works in tandem with Ford’s adaptive cruise control that stops and goes in traffic as well as their very good lane-centering and speed sign recognition software.

These systems can be very handy but usually work on roads that have clearly defined lines or edges. Again, I am a bit skittish, and I truly hope automakers encourage drivers to always stay focused on the road. I’m eager to try out the system, but maybe with my hands at the ready.

The Expedition gets a new 12.4-inch instrument panel that’s customizable. It also gets a standard 12-inch or optional 15.5-inch touchscreen that utilizes Ford’s SYNC 4 or upgraded SYNC4A infotainment system. It’s a good one, folks.

Other interior options include Bang & Olufsen audio system with 360-degree surround sound and a rear-seat entertainment system with high-def touchscreens.

Big SUV with some big additions and upgrades for this new model year.

Early next year we’ll be able to drive it and let you know if those translate to big improvements from their big competition.

That competition includes the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, and the GMC Yukon. Ford even throws in the Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada.

More off-road capability, a more performance-minded sporty package, and a lot of innovative driver assistance tech. Those are big. Subscribe to the KBB YouTube channel and stay posted on all things Expedition.
