Sparks will occur if an electric field in sufficiently strong. A strong elctric field requires a high potential difference and is more intense around a sharp curve or point. That spark might be initiated by a random occurance of ionising radiation creating free electrons which in turn cause an avelanche of electrons. Through animation and video clips the likely processes are explained.
