I got the covid-19 vaccine and here is how & why! I was excited to learn about the vaccine being administered to the 1b phase and when I heard about sign-ups for pre-registration I quickly filled out the forms. I'm getting this vaccine for a lot of reasons. 1 being by uncle dying from the vaccine and another because of the medical professional I trust in my life who have advised me that it is a good thing. Before taking the test I was feeling a lot of different emotions. I am thankful to the Black Doctor Consortium for administering this vaccine to the disproportionately impacted black community. The presence of all the black volunteers, doctors, EMTs and everyone else made me feel like I was in a safe space with people who cared about me and our community. They are doing amazing work in the city of Philadelphia for the black community and I will not stop singing their praises.

When i got to the location of my appointment i saw that there was a line. I didn't really know what to expect for my appointment so waiting in a line didn't bother me. Besides the line was short and people were social distancing well. While I was waiting, there were some older ladies that had gotten there after me and asked to skip the line because they had trouble standing for long periods of time. I was fine with this because i was in no rush and they are from a more vulnerable population than me. Plus chivalry is not dead and I think that seniors should be allowed to skip lines. Once inside I was eased by the sight of all the black volunteers that were helping with this effort.

From the screening to the actual injection everyone was friendly and the process was super efficient. After they administered the vaccine they asked me to stay in the waiting area for 30 minutes just to monitor me as they did with everyone. There was a nice group of black EMTs who were there on standby just in case anyone was having moderate to severe side effects. I felt completely fine during my wait just some nerves wearing off. After it was all over I got in my car and did a dance because i was proud of myself for going through with it.
