I arrived at the remote off-grid solar hybrid EV charger at the Nullarbor Roadhouse in remote far western South Australia on April 20, 2024.
The NRMA charger was still free, payment system pending, and I charged the MY24 Polestar 2 long-range, single-motor from 21 to 90 per cent.

This hybrid charger is fantastic to make the Nullarbor crossing fast and easy, catering to the four of five EVs I saw on each crossing.
It needs more solar and battery storage, but the concept is great for now. The system will need some fine tuning and ongoing maintenance. The crossing can still be done even without it relatively easily. But rapid charging and getting up to 73kw for an hour for a full battery in the absolutely middle of nowhere was amazing.

The second charge session in upcoming video went less smoothly and took a 3 hours, but it was busy, and I could have charged in about the same time at the AEVA 22kw 3-phase round the back, which costs $25. A similar charger at Border Village is graciously free, until the new RAA 7kw chargers go in soon. Border Village also a great place to stay, eat and recharge in the campground.

Stay tuned for videos of the WA border trip from Kangaroo Island to Eucla and then returning via west coast SA.

Now the cost and charging summary of the whole trip:
Total charge cost the nine RAA charge sessions for the 3000km was $133.49, that’s it!! Amazing.
My accommodation 6 out of 8 nights came with 15 amp overnight charging included, and these powered sites ranged from $27 to $47.
So the whole trip, charging and accommodation cost me less than $350.

The RAA network is phenomenal. Charge stations visited/inspected were Port Wakefield, Snowtown, Port Augusta, Kimba, Wudinna, Ceduna x2 - (Streaky Bay and Elliston - not used) - Cowell and Normanville.
Every charger worked flawlessly with an RFID card and they are ideally spaced, with fantastic parking in scenic and central sites. The only thing missing is cover.
RAA for the win!!

Can’t wait for the next EV roadtrip!!
