Looking to join the electric revolution but not sure you're ready to give up on gas completely? There's a Ford Escape for you in 2022. Think of the Escape PHEV as the way to mitigate, rather than eliminate gasoline consumption. Want to go cold turkey? Ford will happily sell you a Mustang Mach-E, but if you want a pragmatic middle ground, its hard to go wrong with an Escape.

If you’ve heard of Toyota’s excellent RAV4 Prime, then the Escape’s setup will feel very familiar. A 2.5L 4 cylinder hitches a ride with a 14.2 kWh lithium-ion battery to produce 221 total horsepower, 37 miles of EV-only range, and 40 mpg combined. While a little less efficient than the regular Escape Hybrid, the benefit of being able to operate solely on electrons for longer distances means you might be able to go an entire day without using a drop of gas. Plus, unlike Toyota’s hybrid and plug-in hybrid systems, the Escape implements a mechanical AWD setup for better control of traction in slippery conditions.

According to recent studies, it seems that owners of plug-in hybrids like the Escape aren’t choosing to plug in their vehicles to charge. While you wouldn’t need to install a charging apparatus in your garage to make the purchase of an Escape PHEV work, you will only experience the full advantages of this type of powertrain if you remember to plug it in every now and then, say at your grocery store’s Electrify America charging station. As alternative fuel vehicles go, this is an excellent choice, so use it wisely and take advantage of the benefits!
