In this video, I have discussed about Hantavirus : introduction, virology, diseases caused by this Hantavirus, methods of transmission, symptoms, treatment and prevention. In addition, you will also find out which virus is more fatal, either Hanta virus or coronavirus?

Hantavirus is a single stranded enveloped RNA virus in the family.
It is named after Hantan River area in South Korea.
These viruses normally infect rodents, but do not cause disease in them.

Humans may become infected with Hantavirus throught contact with rodents urine, saliva or faeces or even rodents bite.
The Human to human transmission is not known except Andes virus which can get transmitted through body contact.
Transmission through fomitess has not been demonstrated.

The duration that Hantavirus remains infectious in the environment varies on factors such ar rodents diet, temperature, humidity and whether outdoor or indoors. The Hantaviruses havve been demonstrated to remain active for 2 - 3 days at normal room temperature while UV rays in direct sunlight kills them in few hours. However, rodent droppings or urine of undetermined age should always be treated as infectious.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS):
It is also known as Old World Hantavirus. It is found in Europe, Asia and Africa. Incubation period of this hemorrhagic fever is 2 - 4 weeks. Their severity depends on the viral load.
Inital symptoms begin suddenly and include intense headaches, back and abdominal pain, fever, chills, nauseas and blurred vision. Individuals may have flushing of facem inflammation or redness of eyes or rash.
Later symptoms can include low blood pressure, acute shock, vascular leakage and acute kidney injury which can cause severe fluid overload.
Severity of disease depends upon the virus that cause the infection

Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome (HPS):
It is also known as New World Hantavirus. It is found in North, Central and South America. It is an often fatal pulmonary disease. Its symptoms include prodromal symptoms : flu like symptoms : fever, cough, muscle pain, headache and lethargy.
It is characterised by onset of shortness of breath with rapidly evolving pulmonary edema.
The case fatality rate is 36% which is higher than coronavirus making this disease more deadly.

Treatment:
There is no specific treatment, cure or vaccine for this hantavirus infection.
However, if infected individuals are recognised early and receive medical care in ICU, they may do better.
Immunotherapy, administration of human neutralising antibodies during acute phases of Hantavirus has only been studied in mice, hamsters and rats.

Prevention:
According to CDC, the best prevention strategy is to eliminate or minimize contact with rodents in the home, workplace or campsite.
General prevention can be accomplished by disposing rodent nests, sealing any cracks or holes in homes where mice or rats could get in, setting up traps or laying down poisons or using natural predators such as cats in the home.
