Boris Johnson faced Keir Starmer and MPs in the Commons for Prime Minister's Questions.

Boris Johnson raised taxes to their highest level since the Second World War on Tuesday, in a £36 billion move to reduce soaring NHS waiting lists and tackle the social care crisis.

National Insurance will rise by 1.25 percentage points and retirees will no longer see their state pensions increase by average earnings this year, breaking explicit Tory promises.

Today, Mr Johnson said the plan gives people certainty about avoiding "the catastrophic costs" and the loss of their home and possessions.

Sir Keir Starmer reminded Boris Johnson that he had previously called National Insurance regressive.

But the Prime Minister says "at least we have a plan", then criticises Labour for not having dealt with it in the past.

He says he has found "a crouton of facts" in Sir Keir's "minestrone" of words - that Labour will vote against the tax rise.

But Sir Keir says the Prime Minister is breaking manifesto pledges and raising taxes without offering any firm commitments on care or the NHS backlog.
