Don’t throw away sour milk! There are many ways to use spoiled milk in the kitchen and around the home. You can use spoiled milk in the garden, too. But first things first. Milk goes sour primarily because of the growth and proliferation of specific bacteria, typically lactobacillus, which thrive in dairy products. It’s a group of beneficial bacteria known for its role in the fermentation of milk and other foods.

While sour milk is not suitable for drinking or using as fresh milk, it can be repurposed in various ways. From replacing buttermilk in recipes to soothing skin conditions, there are many things to do with spoiled milk.

Sour milk, or spoiled milk in this context, is not the same as curdled milk that’s turned into a greenish, chunky mess. We’re talking about milk that has a slightly tangy taste but is otherwise still good to use. If your milk looks like something from a science experiment gone wrong, it’s best to get rid of it.
