The UK is facing a pothole problem, with a record £16.3 billion needed to restore the roads to a maintainable state, according to the annual Asphalt Industry Alliance (AIA) survey. The number of potholes filled in England and Wales has increased by 43% in the past year, costing UK drivers almost £500 million in repairs. The cause of potholes is water getting into cracks in worn or repaired roads, freezing, and expanding, causing the road to disintegrate. The problem is exacerbated by a lack of investment, with UK roads spending in 2019 being only half of what it was in 2006. The AIA chairman states that more than half of the road network has less than 15 years of structural life remaining. Motoring experts suggest that local authorities need more funding for road maintenance and a rethinking of how roads are maintained, with a focus on proactive maintenance rather than immediate repairs. Suggestions include a national resurfacing program and taking highway maintenance away from councils. The pothole problem is a safety concern as well, as poor road conditions contribute to accidents. The Liberal Democrats propose giving more money to local authorities specifically for road maintenance.
