Starting within the ballpark of a reasonable offer is an important part of negotiating car price. Car dealerships will make the extra effort to reach an agreement with customers who are close to a realistic sale price. Customers who start too low are said to be "trying to buy too much car" and are dismissed by the dealership, which ultimately wastes the customer's time.
