The Volvo EX30 is a full-electric small crossover. It is one of the most important new Volvos for years.

It is available in 3 trims: core, plus and ultra. You can choose between Single motor, Single motor Extended Range, and Twin motor all-wheel drive. The all-wheel drive performance model has an incredible 422 HP and gives you an acceleration of just 3.6 sec 0-100 km/h. This is the single motor version with the larger battery and 272 HP.

The first thing you'll notice is the nordic, modern styling combined with an Onyx Black exterior, 20” rims and a large moonroof.

Volvo has done a great job of combining elegance and sportiness in the EX30. The front grille gives the EX30 a strong presence on the road. The “Thor’s Hammer” LED headlights add a touch of sophistication and the taillights are carrying the well-known Volvo design language.

Overall, the exterior design of the Volvo EX30 is very well executed.

The car is just 423.3 cm long and 203.2 cm wide incl. mirrors, so it is very compact, and it makes parking easy, and still it offers great space for the driver and the front passenger but it is tight in the rear and only really suitable for children.

The luggage capacity is 318 liters with the seats up - with the seats folded you get 904 liters, and there is a small frunk with 19 liters capacity.

Volvo has priced the EX30 at the upper end of the segment. Prices do include a 10 year/150,000 km service package and a 5 year 150,000 km warranty giving you peace of mind.

The EX30 long range comes with a lithium-ion battery with 64 kWh net capacity. The WLTP range is 462-478 km, and my test result was a decent 325 km range in temperatures between 3°-12° C with an average consumption of 20-22 kWh / 100 km. This is not great, and is due to a combination of the big 20” tyres, a high coefficient of drag of 0.28.

The EX30 fast-charges with up to 153 kW, so charging 10-80% at a fast DC-charger will be approx. 27 minutes.

The materials used throughout the cabin are of high quality, and the attention to detail is great. There are some beautiful design parts like the door handles and the practical center console, but I find it a bit annoying that the controls for the power windows are positioned in the center console and fiddly to use.

The EX30 feels at home in the city, but performs well on the occasional long journey at highway speed, too.

Now, is it really a Volvo? Well, yes, I would say so. If anything, Volvo is known for making solidly built and ultra safe cars, and the EX30 is packed with advanced safety features. The crash test results of the EX30 are excellent, too, with a 5* rating.

The assist systems do make some unnecessary noises and sometime thinks the driver has fallen asleep unless you stare at the road. These warning noises can be a bit annoying and limits the fun of driving a bit.

The brand-new Volvo EX30 is a modern, compact SUV that offers a good blend of style, comfort, performance, and safety. With the nordic inspired exterior, its contemporary Indigo interior, a very nice Harman-Kardon sound bar and the advanced safety features, it's hard not to like this vehicle and I think it deserves to sell well. But the high price could prove an obstacle for the EX30.
