South Point is the southern most point in the US. It is also the site of the oldest artifacts yet discovered in Hawaii. Around the 3rd to fifth century AD a large double-hulled canoe propelled by sails made of woven pandanus left the Marquesas Islands 2500 miles away and landed along one of the beaches on the Big Island, possibly here at South Point. They brought with them food staples : taro, breadfruit, pigs, dogs, and several types of fowl. Although this area of the island is dry and desolate it makes up for it by having very fertile fishing grounds for Tuna and other large fish. There are constant strong winds here making fishing in boats difficult, but the settlers learned to carve holes in the rocks along the cliff to secure their boats and hold them in place.
Today there are a few ranches several miles north of the area and not much else. It is a favorite area for local and native fisherman and a favorite destination for tourists at the Green sand beach a few miles to the east. This video flys over the Fishing and camping areas and highlights the Green Sand Beach.
