In this video I show you how to replace a bad ABS accumulator on 1994-1997 Accords.

The most common cause for a 1-8 ABS code on these vehicles is a bad accumulator. The accumulator stores brake fluid under pressure provided to it by the ABS pump. The accumulator has a piston inside it with brake fluid on one side and high pressure nitrogen gas on the other.

Since brake fluid won't compress but gas will the piston is forced upward by the brake fluid entering the accumulator. This compresses the nitrogen gas and allows the modulator to store the fluid under pressure.

After years of use the nitrogen gas slowly leaks out reducing the amount of pressurized brake fluid the accumulator can store.

Eventually the accumulator is unable to store a sufficient amount of pressurized brake fluid.

The ABS computer occasionally tests the accumulator when the engine is started. It does this by running the pump to pressurize the accumulator to 3,100 PSI. It then opens a valve on the modulator to allow the pressure to slowly bleed off. If the accumulator is good it should stay above a certain pressure for a certain amount of time.

If the pressure drops too fast. The ABS computer disables the ABS system, turns the ABS light on, and stores a 1-8 code.
