No doubt one of the prettiest places we hiked on the Big Island in Hawaii on our 10 day camping trip. This area is often referred to as "Valley of the Kings" and was a refuge for King Kamehameha. It is estimated that 4000-10,000 people lived here before the arrival of Captain Cook in 1778. In the late 1800s, many Chinese immigrants settled in the valley. In 1946 a Tsunami devastated the entire valley and now only a few dozen people live in the valley, mostly taro farmers, fishermen, and others who are reluctant to leave their simple lifestyle. The only way to enter the valley is by 4X drive or hiking. The hike down is only 1 mile on a mostly paved road but very steep as it drops 900' down to the sea. The Valley is considered Sacred by the Native Hawaiians.
