In the convoluted history of the model, the Toyota GR86 is either a continuation of the 86-nameplate that first came about in the 90s and gained fame with the Initial-D franchise, or a second-generation model of the venerable Toyota GT86 that took the world by storm about a decade ago and put Toyota back on the map as a maker of fun, reliable, and affordable enthusiast cars. Fast-forward to 2024 and the demands of this segment haven't changed much, but have become a little more sophisticated, which is what the GR86 aims to address.
With a bigger, brawnier engine up front, a mildly-upgraded interior in the middle, and a gorgeous body draped over what is ultimately a beautifully-balanced, fastidiously-engineered chassis, we take the manual-transmission GR86 out for a week to put its through its paces and determine if it's truly a daily-driveable sports car, or if it's gone a little too far off the deep end.
