Discrete Event Simulation is fundamental to innovation at Ocado Technology. Learn how we use digital twins of our highly automated warehouses – the most evolved of their kind in the world – to: optimise algorithms and site architecture; test software and potential hardware/technology upgrades; visualise system performance; forecast peak periods such as Christmas; and run live production playback or historical event postmortems.

Bio: Matt Whelan joined Ocado Technology in 2010 working on simulations of future systems, where he designed and simulated the groundbreaking grid solution used in Ocado’s next-generation warehouses. He was then a software architect for the bots running on the grid, encompassing: the firmware; the simulation framework to test it; and the complex analytical data pipeline that feeds it.

In 2016 he moved to Stockholm to set up a research lab, where his team work on implementations of the Ocado Smart Platform beyond retail.
