Senior Ava Wightman is a multi-sport high academia student for Union Grove. Ava has competed as starter on our playoff Volleyball Team this Fall, was the Individual District Champion in Cross Country (Team District Champions too) and helped guide our team to a 4th straight State Meet. Additionally, Ava is on the Cheer Team and takes Dual Credit College courses, which she is currently ranked 6th out of 61 putting her in the top 10% of her Senior Class. Ava is a Team Captain for basketball and leads our team in scoring and steals with 14.1 pts per game and 5.6 steals. Our team is currently 21-5 on the season and 7-1 in District 21AA play (we have qualified for the playoffs). Ava has been named All Tournament in all 3 tournaments we played in this season. Ava is a 3-year starter for Union Grove basketball and is by far having her finest basketball season both on the court with her play/production, but in the locker room and off the court as well with her leadership and support to the other players (especially our 2 Freshman and 1 Sophomore). As we have moved into the month of January, Ava has continued to play great posting averages of 15.5 pts (47% shooting), 6.5 rebs, 6.2 steals, 2.7 assts. Ava comes in before school 2 or 3 times a week to put in extra time shooting all on her own. Ava is completely dedicated and loyal to the basketball program, her teammates, and the coaching staff. She is a great representation of what it is to be a Student Athlete! Ava plans to attend UT Tyler and pursue a degree in nursing. Wightman’s hard work has earned her Class 2A Greater Texas Ford Dealers – Female Athlete of the Month.
