The all-new Audi Q4 e-tron brings Audi's trademark premium vibe to the compact electric crossover segment. As the Volkswagen Group's latest MEB-based EV offering, it shares its underpinnings with the VW ID.4 and Skoda Enyaq but justifies its higher pricing with a more refined driving experience and an interior that feels properly upscale.

From the sleek exterior styling to the well-appointed cabin, the Q4 e-tron looks and feels every bit an Audi. The interior execution is particularly impressive, with high-quality materials, a sharp dual-screen layout, and solid build quality throughout the cabin. However, the overabundance of touch-sensitive controls proves fiddly and distracting to operate on the move.

Powering the Q4 e-tron is a 77-kWh battery pack. The single-motor Q4 45 e-tron makes 201 horsepower while the dual-motor Q4 55 e-tron quattro bumps output to 295 hp. In our tests, the Q4 55 scooted to 60 mph in a reasonably swift 5.8 seconds. But like many EVs, the Q4's real-world driving range falls well short of its EPA estimates – we saw just 234 miles from a full charge, equating to just 78 percent of its 319-mile rating.

The Q4 e-tron makes up for its range shortcomings with polished road manners. The suspension soaks up bumps nicely, the cabin is impressively hushed at speed, and the powertrain responds crisply to throttle inputs. Tight steering and modest body lean make the Q4 feel relatively agile, too, though it's not quite as sporty or engaging as rivals like the Ford Mustang Mach-E or Tesla Model Y.

When it comes time to recharge, the Q4 e-tron can handle DC fast charging at rates up to 135 kW, which is decent but trails the 150-kW capability of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. Even so, Audi estimates the Q4 can recover an 80-percent charge in as little as 29 minutes when plugged into a high-speed charger.

Family-friendly cabin quarters are another Q4 e-tron asset. There's plenty of room for four adults to stretch out, while the 24.8-cubic-foot cargo hold (expanding to 53 cubes with the rear seatbacks folded) provides ample utility. Cabin storage is a weak point, however.

Ultimately, theQ4 e-tron delivers the premium driving experience and upscale cabin ambiance that Audi buyers expect, making it a compelling if pricey choice among compact luxury EVs. At the same time, the Q4's lower-priced VW and Skoda cousins boast longer real-world ranges and more intuitive control layouts, diminishing some of the Q4's premium luster. For shoppers willing to splurge for the Audi experience and style, the Q4 e-tron delivers. But sensible buyers may find better value elsewhere.
