It is a key ethical issue that the War in Ukraine is a war of aggression, and from an international law standpoint, the crime of aggression is distinct from other war crimes. We welcome Dr. Beth Van Schaack Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice, U.S. Department of State, and Professor David Sloss, John A. and Elizabeth H. Sutro Professor of Law, Santa Clara University School of Law in conversation about these important ethical issues.

Have Russian leaders committed the crime of aggression? Have Russian soldiers (and leaders) committed war crimes in Ukraine? Does the U.S. have an ethical duty to support Ukraine, and does that include an ethical duty to help Ukraine achieve military victory against Russia? Is there a moral equivalence between the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022?

For perspectives on these questions and more, join us for a conversation with Dr. Beth Van Schaack, Ambassador-at-Large for Global Criminal Justice at the U.S. Department of State and Professor David Sloss, John A. and Elizabeth H. Sutro Professor of Law, Santa Clara University School of Law.

Moderated by Ethics Center Director of Religious and Catholic Ethics, David DeCosse.

The event is co-sponsored by the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics and the Santa Clara University School of Law.
