It turns out, this 2022 F1 car is as confusing at the front as it is at the rear.

Usually, front wings are incredibly complex, with strakes, planes and all sorts of bits all over them. So how come this new one is so different?

The design for this wing not only creates less wake for the car behind - but actually loses them less downforce if they do catch some dirty air.

By simplifying the wing, there are fewer surfaces that require really clean air to work. The simplified planes are actually more reliable at creating downforce - even if the airflow isn’t perfectly laminar.

And it really seems like this should make for closer racing. Research shows that current F1 cars lose 35% of their downforce when running three car lengths behind another car, and this loss could be reduced to just 4% in 2022.
